Why Work With a Qualified TRE Provider?
Dan Bartlett
TRE’s power lies in its simplicity.
All humans posses a tremor reflex that can be easily activated. Most people can practice at home, after learning the process in person.
All of which begs the question: why work with a qualified provider?
There are 2 answers:
1) Self-regulation
Getting people to shake is simple. Teaching them to regulate their shaking takes time and guidance. Shaking without regulation will send us in circles, feeling overwhelmed and locking us out of the healing potential of TRE.
We can only release when we’re feeling safe, and we can only feel safe when we’re regulating effectively.
Regulation looks different for everyone and a provider can help you tune into your unique cues, so that you remain in the sweet spot, without be under or over-activated. TRE providers go through a year of training to learn how to support shakers, to prevent freezing, flooding and dissociation, to read bodies and to offer skillful interventions.
Unfortuntately, there are many folks who have learned to shake and then appointed themselves as teachers to others. They are wholly unprepared to guide folks who are navigating difficult territory, and risk overwhelm and retraumatisation.
2) Going deeper
At a certain point, you might start experiencing difficult feelings or memories, especially if there is trauma in your past.
Or perhaps you’re just struggling to follow the process without interrupting or over-analysing.
Having someone be present as you navigate your shaking can be a powerful aide.
It can give you the confidence you need to lean into the unknown and trust the wisdom of your body.
